This novella is about an unnamed father and his two unnamed boys who suddenly and unexpectedly lost their wife/mother.
The story is told in points of view that alternate between the boys, Crow, and the father (Dad). The book has three parts, beginning with the arrival of the crow, the crow protecting the family, and ending with the crow leaving.
Soon after the death of the mother a crow, only referred to as Crow, shows up. Crow helps the father and children, he offers advice on how to deal with loss and how to heal and live. Eventually Dad comes to terms with his grief when he gives up his obsession with writing a book about Ted Hughes and his story "Crow", once Dad gives it up he returns home and finds that Crow is gone.
